Indian Traffic Policemen and Public Join Walkathon to Raise Awareness about Varicose Veins

Date: May,2023

In an effort to raise awareness about the prevention of varicose veins, traffic policemen and members of the public participated in a walkathon organized by Rela Hospital and Rotary Club of Madras Mount. The event, titled 'Let's Win Over Varicose Veins - Walk for Well Being Walkathon (WOWW),' took place at Besant Nagar Beach, starting at 5.30 am.

Clad in their white and khaki uniforms, the dedicated traffic policemen marched along with enthusiastic participants, carrying placards with messages emphasizing the importance of walking in preventing varicose veins. The event aimed to highlight the significance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and adopting preventive measures to avoid the onset of this common venous disease.

Doctors from Rela Hospitals, experts in the field of phlebology, were present during the walkathon to provide valuable insights and information. They emphasized that maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular exercise such as walking, and, when necessary, wearing compression stockings can effectively prevent varicose veins.

Dr. Ilankumaran, CEO of Rela Hospitals, highlighted the benefits of walking for improving circulation and maintaining healthy veins. He stated, "Walking is a simple yet effective way to promote blood flow and keep our veins healthy. By incorporating this activity into our daily routines, we can significantly reduce the risk of varicose veins."

The event also shed light on recent studies that have examined the prevalence of varicose veins among individuals in different occupations. A study conducted at Mosul Teaching Hospital in Iraq revealed that among various occupations, including nurses, policemen, and teachers, the overall prevalence of varicose veins in the City of Mosul was found to be 19%. The study further emphasized the importance of preventive measures, such as avoiding prolonged periods of standing and taking regular breaks to sit or walk.

Varicose veins can lead to complications if left untreated, such as ulcers, bleeding, and thromboembolism. Therefore, raising awareness about preventive measures and promoting early intervention is crucial in reducing the incidence of this condition.

The walkathon successfully brought together traffic policemen, healthcare professionals, and members of the public to address the importance of preventing varicose veins through regular exercise and adopting a healthy lifestyle. By taking part in such initiatives, individuals can actively contribute to their own well-being and encourage others to prioritize venous health.

Rela Hospital and Rotary Club of Madras Mount continue to collaborate on initiatives that promote awareness and education regarding various health concerns. Through such efforts, they aim to improve the overall health and well-being of the community.
